Keep it REAL in the kitchen! How to split a vanilla pod…

07th Jun 2025

Vanilla pods are becoming ever-more common in our cooking, but do you know how to release and access all those scrumptious seeds?

Did you know...?

A vanilla pod has a great deal of flavour and can be reused several times before its aroma and taste are depleted.

Do you know how to split a vanilla pod? Not everyone does, but really, it’s rather simple! This is an essential kitchen skill that, here at LittlePod, we might sometimes take for granted. But if you’re not sure how, or just need a reminder, we’re here and on hand to help.

Since launching our new pod packs – featuring organic Madagascan vanilla, Tahitian vanilla and Indonesian vanilla, grown at LittlePod’s collaborative orchard in Bali – the question above is one that has cropped up more and more.

For anyone purchasing a pack, full instructions are included…

But if you don’t have one to hand – or are just looking to brush up on your skills in the kitchen – Janet, LittlePod’s Managing Director and founder, couldn’t make it much simpler in her Vanilla cookbook.

“To split a pod and remove the seeds, first lay it flat on a chopping board,” she writes. “Use a sharp knife to make a vertical cut in the pod and then lay it flat on the surface. Using the back of the knife, put some pressure on the pod and slowly scrape out the seeds in one movement on each half of the pod. Alternatively, butterfly the pod by making a horizontal cut right through the centre of the pod and scrape the seeds out, as in the first method.”

Here at LittlePod, we’re always learning, and it was a treat to get a demonstration in our own kitchen from Peter Gorton, LittlePod ambassador and Master Chef of Great Britain, when he visited to showcase his new collection of real vanilla recipes, created for our website relaunch in 2022 (pictured above).

Not everyone is so fortunate, of course, so if you do have any questions or need further tips about keeping it REAL in YOUR kitchen, please do get in touch or watch our handy video guide below!

We have vanilla pods aplenty, which ones will YOU choose?

Our vanilla pods are available in packs of two from our online store. Choose from:

  • Organic Madagascan vanilla pods. Plump, rich and creamy, this vanilla type is best used with apples, strawberries, melon, peaches and pears, and is a great choice for ice cream, fish and egg-based dishes.
  • Tahitian vanilla pods. Floral and fruity, this vanilla type has soft notes of red wine, peach and cherry, and is best paired with delicate desserts such as custard, ice cream and all fruit-based dishes.
  • Indonesian vanilla pods: Bold and earthy with dark smoky vanilla notes, this vanilla type is best used in rich desserts, chocolates and caramels. The smokiness pairs well with savoury dishes like curries, brown butter, barbecue and cream sauces.
